About Cork
What Is Cork?
Cork is the natural bark of the cork oak (Quercus suber L.). It consists of millions of air-filled cells, giving it unique properties such as elasticity, low weight, and outstanding thermal and acoustic insulation.

The Cork Oak
The cork oak grows mainly in the western Mediterranean region and can live for more than 200 years. Its bark is harvested for the first time after about 25 years and then approximately every nine years – without ever cutting down the tree.
Each harvest stimulates the bark to regenerate naturally while helping to preserve valuable cultural landscapes and wildlife habitats. This makes cork one of the world's most sustainable renewable natural resources.

Why Cork Is Good for the Environment

As they grow, cork oak trees absorb large amounts of CO₂. After each cork harvest, the bark naturally regenerates, allowing the tree to absorb even more carbon dioxide. This enables cork oaks to remain effective carbon sinks for many decades.
The cork industry also makes efficient use of natural resources. Nearly every part of natural cork is reused – from wine corks to cork granules.
