Is Cork Waterproof?

Cork is naturally water-repellent, moisture-resistant and exceptionally durable. Thanks to its high content of suberin, a natural waxy substance found in cork, it absorbs very little water and retains its shape and insulating properties even in damp conditions.

For centuries, cork has been used for fishing nets, buoys, floats, marine applications, wine bottle stoppers and many other products exposed to continuous contact with water. It is even highly resistant to saltwater, making it an excellent material for demanding outdoor and marine environments.

Only heavily used outdoor surfaces, such as furniture, tabletops or wall cladding, may benefit from a suitable surface treatment.
